This year marks the somber 50th anniversary of the September 11th coup d’état in Chile, which forcibly removed Salvador Allende and his democratically-elected Socialist government from power, brutally halting the years-long Leftist revolutionary process underway.
The aftermath saw the imposition of one of Latin America’s bloodiest dictatorships under Augusto Pinochet with the support of the United States, becoming a laboratory for neoliberal policy throughout his regime and further developed in democratic transition. This period left an indelible mark on the lives of millions within the territory known as Chile, with thousands of Leftists subjected to violence, torture and disapperance, as well as hundreds of thousands forced into exile.
Half a century has passed since the inception of the neoliberal Shock Doctrine during Pinochet’s military regime with its legacy continuing to this day.
Today we remember our missing and murdered, and the lives lost in struggle and resistance both during the fascist dictatorship and under surveillance democracy. Join us on September 11th as we remember our fallen and struggle for the living! Marrichiweu!
