Today Wednesday, Chilean Justice will Confirm or Annul the Sentence against Mapuche Political Prisoners on Hunger Strike

October 24th, 2012

Today marks the 60th day of the Mapuche Political Prisoner Hunger Strike and where judges of the Chilean Supreme Court will decide to confirm or annul the sentence against two of the youth currently on hunger strike.

While in Collipulli, the preparation of the Oral Hearings against Eric and Rodrigo Montoya will take place, the Chilean Supreme Court will release its verdict on the motion to annul the trial of Daniel Levinao and Paulino Levipan, sentenced to 12 years in prison for attempted murder of a police officer.

On Tuesday night, Paulino and Eric had to be transferred once again to Angol Hospital where they suffered a worsening of their conditions, including vomiting, dizziness inside their cells, which has maintained their families and the Wente Winkul Mapu community in suspense.

There is a callout to join the Mapuche leaders and their families at the Supreme Court of Chile, today Wednesday at 12 noon, at Morande and Bandera Street in Santiago.

If the conviction is annulled, this means that the prisoners will have to face a new trial and judicial proceedings for the same incidents, having the prosecution reformulate its strategy. If the conviction is confirmed, a radicalization of the hunger strike is expected, as the prisoners themselves affirmed they “are willing to assume a dignified death.”
